The Control Center
We think and solve problems with the front part of our brain. Further back, the motor area on each side of the brain controls our muscles. Behind that, the sensory area controls our sense of touch. Other areas of the cerebrum help us to see, hear, speak and remember.
Vision
All your senses are received in a part of the brain called the cortex, which is like the brain’s rind, the outer layer of the brain at the top. The part of your brain that registers what you see is called the “visual cortex.” This is right at the back of the brain.
Intelligence and Learning
Both people and animals act by instinct, but people are more intelligent than animals.
Our brain can hold a huge amount of information and use it to solve very difficult problems and think out how things work.
The two halves of the brain
The cerebrum is divided into two halves, which each seem to do different kinds of thinking. You use the left half of the speaking, and solving problems. The right half controls the way you feel and your imagination.
The left side of your brain controls the right side of your body; the right side controls the left. Most people are right-handed because the left side of the brain is dominant. In left-handed people, the right side of the brain is dominant. Since the part of the brain that controls speech is in the left of the brain, and the part of the brain that controls awareness of space is in the right, some people believe left-handed people are likely to be good at art and design.
